TANNED RIVER OTTER FUR COLLECTION

River otter is, by most measures, the most durable fur in North America - and one of the densest. Trappers have long used otter as the benchmark against which other furs are rated for wearability, and it consistently comes out at the top.

What sets otter apart

The density is the thing. Otter fur is packed extraordinarily tightly, with short, sleek guard hairs over an underfur so thick that water never reaches the skin. The result is a fur that feels almost solid to the touch - smooth, heavy and unmistakably luxurious. The color runs rich dark brown, often with a paler silvery throat and belly.

That density also makes otter exceptionally hard-wearing. It is the fur of choice where a garment or trim needs to survive real use rather than sit in a closet.

Our otter

We sell wild river otter in premium grade - full, clean pelts with the fur and hide quality that justifies the price. These are professionally tanned with soft, supple leather, and harvested legally and ethically in the United States and Canada under regulated seasons. Otter is a species with strict harvest management, and supply is genuinely limited. When we have good otter in stock, it moves.

What it is for

Otter suits high-wear trim and collars, traditional and ceremonial work - it holds particular significance in Northern Plains and Great Lakes regalia - hat bands, knife sheaths and possibles bags, display and collections, and any project where a small quantity of exceptional fur does the work.
